Skill Overview
*
*
A full-day training session designed to raise awareness and build competence in working safely with high voltage electrical systems. The course introduces the key hazards associated with HV environments, including electric shock, arc flash, and equipment failure. Participants will explore the differences between grounded and earthed systems, and learn to recognise the characteristics of well-designed—and poorly designed—HV installations. The session also addresses critical human factors, emphasising behaviour, situational awareness, and the importance of following safe working practices. Guidance on appropriate PPE, insulated tools, and risk mitigation strategies is provided to support confident and compliant work around high voltage systems.
Learning Objectives
*
*
1. Identify the key hazards associated with working on or near hazardous voltages, including electric shock, thermal risks, and arc-related injuries. 2. Describe the principles of grounding and earthing, and their role in high-voltage system safety. 3. Recognise good and poor design practices in high-voltage systems, especially in the context of motors and generators. 4. Apply safe working procedures using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and diagnostic tools such as voltmeters and insulation testers. 5. Understand the importance of human behaviour in safety—such as teamwork, buddy systems, and continuous risk assessment. 6. Demonstrate awareness of design strategies that reduce risk, including isolation, monitoring, bonding, and low-voltage retention where possible. 7. Reflect on how human factors, communication, and learning from past incidents contribute to a culture of electrical safety. 8. Comply with best practices and safety expectations aligned with turbine and motor industry standards, and Coventry University’s mandatory training requirements.
