Skill Overview

A Lean Manufacturing Operative works in a manufacturing environment, focusing on optimising production processes by applying lean principles. This apprenticeship prepares individuals to contribute to continuous improvement, reduce waste, and improve efficiency and product quality. Operatives play a key role in ensuring that manufacturing systems run smoothly, consistently meeting production targets while minimising costs and waste.

Lean Manufacturing Principles

Understanding the core principles of lean manufacturing, including reducing waste, maximising efficiency, and continuous improvement (Kaizen).
Knowledge of different types of waste (e.g., overproduction, defects, motion) and how to eliminate them.

Health and Safety Compliance

Ensuring a strong focus on health and safety regulations in the workplace, including the safe operation of equipment and tools.
Identifying potential hazards and adhering to environmental and organisational safety policies.
Production Process Improvement

Learning to monitor production processes and identifying areas for improvement.
Applying lean tools and techniques, such as 5S, value stream mapping, and root cause analysis, to streamline production and eliminate inefficiencies.
Quality Control

Gaining the skills to inspect products and ensure they meet required quality standards.
Understanding quality assurance processes and how to detect and address defects or production issues promptly.
Effective Teamworking and Communication

Collaborating with other departments, such as engineering, maintenance, and quality control, to ensure smooth operations.

This apprenticeship is available to employers and employees looking to upskill in their organisation. We cannot support applications from unemployed individuals.

Sole traders or self-employed individuals cannot enrol themselves but may enrol a new employee.

For apprentices aged 16-21 the training costs are fully funded by the government. For apprentices aged over 21, there is a 5% co-investment which would be paid by the employer.
