Skill Overview

This course is designed for early years educators to strengthen their professional literacy skills when working with young children, colleagues, and families. It focuses on the key reading, writing, and communication skills required to document observations, interpret the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, and engage in effective workplace communication. Through practical, scenario-based tasks, learners will gain confidence in writing clear observation logs, reading and applying EYFS guidance, and composing professional workplace emails and memos. The course supports practitioners in delivering high-quality care and education by improving their ability to record, reflect and communicate effectively in a childcare setting. Over a 4-week period (12 hours total), learners will develop practical skills to support clear, professional interaction with children, families, and colleagues. Key topics include: • Communicating effectively with children, parents, and team members. • Writing clear observations and progress notes. • Understanding and applying EYFS language in practice. • Documenting behaviour, learning, and development accurately. • Using appropriate tone and vocabulary in workplace correspondence. Employer Benefits: • Improves documentation standards: Staff are trained to write accurate, objective observation logs that meet EYFS requirements and contribute to high-quality planning and assessment. • Supports effective communication: Learners enhance their ability to communicate clearly and professionally with parents, carers, and colleagues, promoting a collaborative and trusting environment. • Promotes understanding of EYFS compliance: Staff develop confidence in reading and applying EYFS policies in daily practice, helping settings remain aligned with statutory guidance. • Enhances team effectiveness: Clear communication reduces misunderstandings, supports smooth handovers, and ensures consistent record-keeping and reporting across the team. • Flexible delivery: Sessions can be delivered online, on-site in your setting, or from our professional training venue — scheduled to work around your team’s operational needs. This is a non-regulated course. Session Duration – 12 hours over 4 weeks (3 hours per session)
