The Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges is an introduction to the knowledge and understanding needed to work in a school or college environment. You can use the things learnt on this course to apply to the many varied roles that full and part-time support staff may fulfil, including administrative roles, site support roles, technical roles and volunteer roles, as well as roles that work directly with children and young people in the learning environment.

Understand schools and colleges as organisations: This first unit allows you to gain knowledge and an understanding of the school and college organisational structure and function. Understand children and young people’s development: This unit explores holistic development. Throughout the unit you will also consider effects on development and the role of the support worker to support the child and young person when concerns are raised about an individual’s development. Understand communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults: In this unit you will gain the knowledge and understanding that underpins effective communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults. Understand children and young people’s health and safety: The aim of this unit is to raise awareness of health and safety through knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures in a learning environment. Safeguarding children and young people: In this unit you will learn about safeguarding children and young people. Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people: In this final unit you will explore equality, diversity and inclusion. The unit will consider legislation, policy and procedures in schools and colleges to protect children and young people in a learning environment from the effects of discrimination.

The majority of our courses are free for Manchester residents aged 19+. During your assessment and enrolment appointment, we will assess your eligibility. However, if you meet the requirements below, it’s likely that you’ll be eligible and will not have to pay any fees for your course. • Employed and earning less than £25,000 • Unemployed and in receipt of an income-based benefit • Studying for your first full Level 2 on an eligible legal entitlement course.

For this course you require Level 2 English and maths skills and/or be committed to doing a Level 2 Functional Skills course in each of these subjects alongside this course.
