If you’re a business owner or MD, you’ll be used to wearing different hats and teaching yourself to become an expert in everything from accountancy to web design. But when the time comes to entrust a new hire with holding the reins or adding another person to your small team, the stakes can feel pretty high.

That’s where GR Consulting comes in. We help you add recruitment expertise to your business-owner skill-set and feel confident becoming a first-time/new employer.


With our 'Become an Employer | HR Set-Up Training for SMEs and Micro-Businesses', you will:

- Learn everything you need to know about employment law and your employer obligations (including HR, finance, health and safety)

- Be provided with all recruitment documentation for your new starters (including formal Offer Letter, Contract of Employment, New Starter Form, Reference Request Letters and Induction Checklists)

- Receive free customisable templates for 20 essential HR policies and procedures to allow you to produce your own employee handbook for new recruits

- Get advice on the set-up of your HR records / database to help you manage the onboarding and people management process


The training session lasts 3 hours and can be delivered online (monthly sessions scheduled - please enquire for upcoming dates) or in-person at a time/date of your choosing at your office or local co-working facility.

If you require further support with your recruitment process, we can also provide training and coaching to assist you with job design, job advertisement templates, job board advertising purchase, shortlisting, creating an interview matrix and interview technique, selection and offer management.

Learning Objectives

During the course, we'll cover:

- Legal Obligations on becoming an employer (including pre-employment checks, employment insurance, HR record-keeping and health and safety)

 - Key Employment Legislation you need to know (including contractual obligations, statutory rights such as SSP and WTR, GDPR compliance and employer's liability)

- Financial Requirements (your payroll, tax, pension and reporting obligations on becoming an employer including a HMRC checklist)

- An introduction to HR Policies and Procedures (covering absence, disciplinaries and grievances, flexible working, parental rights and leave, employee code of conduct, information security and more)

 -  Summary of free support for employers and top tips on starting your employer journey
