Skill Overview
*
*
An intermediate course that provides a clear and structured overview of modern power electronic systems. Starting from first principles, the course covers semiconductor behaviour, switching devices, diodes, and transistors, before progressing to key components such as MOSFETs and IGBTs. Participants will examine switching losses, thermal considerations, and the operation of common topologies including DC-DC converters and inverters. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is introduced as a key control technique, with practical examples to illustrate real-world applications. The course is designed to build foundational understanding and confidence in working with power electronic systems across a range of industries.
Learning Objectives
*
*
1. Explain the role of power electronics in modern electrical systems, including its impact on renewable energy, electric vehicles, industrial automation, and consumer devices. 2. Describe the behaviour and structure of semiconductors, including how doping with elements like phosphorus or boron creates N-type and P-type materials. 3. Understand and analyse the operation of MOSFETs, including their role as voltage-controlled switches, and identify their key operating regions: cutoff, ohmic, and saturation. 4. Differentiate between power electronic converter types, such as DC-DC converters, inverters (DC-AC), rectifiers (AC-DC), and AC-AC converters, and describe their key functions and applications. 5. Explain the principles and design considerations of inverters, including the difference between current source inverters (CSI) and voltage source inverters (VSI), and the use of H-bridge topologies for AC power generation. 6. Evaluate the efficiency and suitability of power electronic components and converter topologies for various real-world systems, such as solar power installations, EV charging systems, and motor drives. 7. Apply knowledge to interpret circuit behaviour and predict performance of semiconductor devices and converter systems in practical contexts. 8. Reinforce theoretical learning through applied problem-solving, simulations, and practice exercises that challenge learners to make design and diagnostic decisions.
