This course will develop your knowledge and understanding of mental health issues.

It has been designed to help you implement a healthy lifestyle and prepare you for further learning or training in this subject area.

Learning Objectives

What is meant by mental health: You will learn about the terms ‘mental health’ and ‘mental ill health’, the possible causes of mental health problems, examples of mental health problems, and any common sources of information on mental health issues.

The social and personal effects of mental ill health: In this unit, you will explore the prominence of individuals in the UK who experience mental health problems, the effects that experiencing a mental problem might have on an individual, how mental health is reported in the media and how this can affect the individual or the rest of society, and how stereotyping can affect people with mental health problems.

The responses to mental health issues: In this third unit, you will identify the rights that those who are experiencing mental ill health have, the possible responses that can be made to support an individual with mental health problems, factors which can have an impact on whether a response will work, where to refer people for further help or guidance about mental health issues, and ways to promote positive mental health.

Cultural diversity in relation to mental health issues: In this final unit you will explore the possible causes of mental distress in different cultural groups and examples of the barriers that may exist for different cultural groups accessing services. You will also discover ways of overcoming barriers to accessing services and factors that can help promote positive mental health amongst different cultural groups.

The majority of our courses are free for Manchester residents aged 19+. During your assessment and enrolment appointment, we will assess your eligibility.

However, if you meet the requirements below, it’s likely that you’ll be eligible and will not have to pay any fees for your course.

•	Employed and earning less than £25,000
•	Unemployed and in receipt of an income-based benefit
•	Studying for your first full Level 2 on an eligible legal entitlement course.
