The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE & Skills) is designed to provide trainee teachers with the knowledge and skills to teach in a range of contexts. This course is made up of five mandatory units and seven optional units. You will need to study at least three of the optional units alongside the mandatory units to achieve this qualification. Teaching my subject: This unit includes curriculum development, pedagogic content knowledge, threshold concepts and troublesome knowledge, embedding maths and English and progression advice. Learners and learning: This unit is separated in two parts. Part A includes getting to know your learners in FE, learning about their journeys to FE, a range of support needs, safeguarding or EDI and recognising their wider expectations. Part B learning includes contemporary learning theory, neuroscience, role and currency of research and evidence, application of theory to practice and how to encourage learners to be independent and aim high. Teachers and teaching: Unit 3 is also split into two parts. Part A focuses on teachers and includes content such as the role of a teacher, what makes a good teacher, how to work with and learn from other teachers and finally other sources of support. Part B then focuses on teaching and covers rigorous curriculum thinking, planning and delivering sessions, developing resources to meet learner needs, individual support (including special educational needs and disabilities, and mental health), teacher expectations of learners including classroom management, face to face and remote delivery, assessment and feedback and embedding English, maths and digital into your lessons. Professional Practice: This unit is split into three parts. Part A which focuses on Teaching practice includes content on micro teaches, preparation for placement, observation of other teachers, team and solo teaching, curriculum planning and review, lesson planning and adaptations, planning and conducting assessment, using assessment to inform planning, assessment feedback and advice or guidance and more. Part B which is named as Being a professional includes the occupational standards, developing expertise, updating and continuous professional development (CPD), professional responsibilities, working with colleagues and professional status. Finally, part C which is named The FE and Skills sector includes an overview of the FE and Skills sector, types of programmes, timetables, contracts, government policy, regulations (legal and local), funding and organisational and wider support. Effective digital and online pedagogies: This unit focuses on your personal digital skills, a range of educational technology, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality and similar technologies and managing digital delivery.

To be eligible for this course, you should have a minimum Level 2 English and maths qualification. You are also required to have a degree in your subject specialism or evidenced occupational competency. For this course there is a teaching placement requirement of minimum 250-hour teaching placement and a DBS check is also needed. You will also need access to a device (laptop or computer) at home. You can apply to our Chromebook loan system if you do not have a suitable device.
