Skill Overview

This course supports early years educators in developing the numeracy knowledge and practical skills needed to foster strong mathematical foundations in young children. Through hands-on activities and reflective practice, participants will explore how to create number-rich learning opportunities, manage classroom budgets, interpret observation data, and apply numeracy in day-to-day planning. This course balances professional development with practical application, helping educators strengthen their confidence in support early numeracy while also applying maths skills in budgeting and resource management. Over a 4-week period (12 hours total), learners will explore practical strategies for introducing core numeracy concepts in engaging and age-appropriate ways. Key topics include: • Teaching basic skills like counting, sorting, and measuring. • Introducing early budgeting and problem-solving activities. • Interpreting and using simple data in a learning context. • Creating number-rich environments for early learners. • Observing and assessing children’s numeracy progress. Employer Benefits: • Improves curriculum delivery: Staff gain skills to confidently embed maths across the EYFS framework using play-based learning and real-life contexts. • Supports high-quality provision: Educators learn how to track and respond to children’s developmental progress using data-informed planning. • Strengthens budgeting and resource management: Staff become more confident in managing limited budgets for classroom supplies. • Aligns with OFTSED and EYFS expectations: Build staff capability in observation, documentation, and child development tracking. • Minimises disruption through flexible delivery: Sessions can be delivered on-site, at our training centre, or online to suit staff schedules. • Supports CPD: This course provides a strong foundation for participants to progress into further continuous professional development opportunities. This is a non-regulated course. Session Duration – 12 hours over 4 weeks (3 hours per session).

By the end of this course, participants will be able to: • Explain how young children develop early numeracy skills such as counting, sorting, and pattern recognition, and apply this knowledge to support learning. • Create number-rich learning environments using a range of hands-on materials, digital tools and engaging activities. • Manage small classroom budgets using addition, subtraction, estimation, and price comparison to make effective purchasing decisions. • Collect and interpret observation data to track children’s mathematical development over time and identify areas for targeted support. • Plan and delivery numeracy-focused activities that integrate budgeting, measurements, and counting into real-world early years scenarios. • Reflect on personal practice and confidence in using numeracy for both teaching and managing resources in early years settings.
