Skill Overview

Functional Skills qualifications are intended to support applicants who wish to upskill and have accreditation in English.

These qualifications will build your confidence and motivation, and the skills you gain will be valuable in the workplace and or enhance your opportunities to move forward into a new role. 

This is a 17 week programme, with a Level 2 FS exam on the final week of the course.

The course attendance is 2 hours per week in a virtual classroom (online), there is an additional 2 hours per week expectation of self-study and practice.

Course Duration: 34 hours virtual classroom, 34 hours self-study and practice

Learning Objectives

Functional Skills English Level 2 is split into the following areas: 

Speaking - Listening and Communicating - this will include extended narratives and information (information may be on technical, concrete, or abstract topics), discussions, detailed explanations and presentations, all at varying lengths. This area of the programme is covered over a period of 5 weeks.

Reading - This should include a range of straightforward and complex texts on a range of topics and of varying lengths that instruct, describe and explain. This area of the programme is covered over a period of 6 weeks.

Writing - Text: this will include straightforward and complex texts such as articles, narratives, explanations and reports of varying lengths. Spelling, punctuation and grammar and writing composition. This area of the programme is covered over a period of 6 weeks.

This course is part of our Skills Development Service.

To be eligible for this training, you must be:

•	19 years old or over 
•	Employed, volunteering or an unpaid worker.
•	Have the right to live and work in the UK. 
•	You must not already have achieved a level 2 qualification, in this subject, in the last 3 years.

This support is available for those living in Greater Manchester or one of the neighbouring areas. These include parts of Lancashire, Derbyshire, Merseyside, West Yorkshire, and Cheshire – your eligibility will be checked by one of our Skills Coaches.
