Skill Overview
*
*
This course offers a comprehensive, structured introduction to machines and drives, a core part of the PEMD (Power Electronics, Machines, and Drives) family that underpins much of today’s low-carbon and automated technologies. Learners explore how electrical machines convert power into motion, and how drives control speed, torque, and direction across a wide range of real-world applications—from factory conveyors and electric vehicles to wind turbines and domestic appliances. The course begins with essential concepts, introducing key machine types such as DC, induction, synchronous, and universal motors, alongside the fundamental role of motor drives. As learners progress, they investigate the electromagnetic principles behind machine operation, compare performance characteristics, and examine how to select the right machine for the job. They also explore modern drive control techniques, including feedback systems, closed-loop control, and digital signal processing. Further modules address energy efficiency, losses, power quality, and the integration of machines and drives into larger systems. The course concludes with a forward-looking view of innovation in PEMD, including axial flux motors, silicon carbide drives, and smart control systems. Delivered through clear explanations, visual demonstrations, analogies, and discussion-based learning, this course equips learners with the knowledge and confidence to understand and evaluate machines and drives in both current and emerging technologies.
Learning Objectives
*
*
1. Describe the basic operating principles of electric motors and generators, including electromagnetic induction and torque generation. 2. Compare common types of motors (e.g., DC, induction, synchronous, and brushless) and their typical applications. 3. Explain the key differences between motors and generators, and how energy is converted in each. 4. Identify where and how motors and generators are used in systems such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, and industrial equipment. 5. Outline the basic components of a motor or generator system, including stators, rotors, windings, and bearings. 6. Recognise typical control methods for motors (e.g., start/stop control, speed control, braking), without covering inverter technology. 7. Interpret basic motor and generator specifications and datasheets (e.g., rated voltage, power, efficiency, speed). 8. Discuss the role of motors and generators in supporting green technologies and reducing carbon emissions. 9. Identify safety considerations and routine checks when working around motor and generator systems.
