This interactive, one and a half hour workshop developing an initial awareness of Makaton as a programme that combines speech, signs and symbols to support understanding and expression.

Gaining a basic understanding of who might benefit (e.g. children, young people and adults with communication or learning difficulties, or those in early language development).

Learning a small set of core signs and symbols (usually around 30–40) linked to everyday, functional vocabulary, sometimes with an additional themed set (e.g. Early Years, holidays, college).

Practising producing signs clearly alongside speech and beginning to use simple symbols to back up spoken language.

Building confidence to start using a limited range of signs and symbols in real‑life contexts (home, school, community activities)

Learning Objectives

Develop a basic understanding of what Makaton is, who uses it, and how signs and symbols support spoken language for children, young people and adults with communication needs.


Learn a small set of functional signs and symbols (usually around 30–40), and practise producing them clearly alongside speech in simple everyday contexts.


Increase confidence to start using a limited range of Makaton signs and symbols in home, education, community or workplace settings, and to decide whether to progress to further Makaton training (e.g. Level 1)
