The A61 Appointed Person Course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to plan and manage safe lifting operations in compliance with industry regulations and standards.
Learning Objectives

Planning Lifting Operations Create detailed lift plans, including method statements and risk assessments. Assess site conditions, load characteristics, and crane configurations. Legal and Safety Compliance Understand relevant legislation, including LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations). Ensure all lifting activities adhere to health and safety standards. Risk Assessment Identify potential hazards and implement risk mitigation strategies. Evaluate environmental factors such as ground conditions and weather impact. Team Coordination Manage and communicate effectively with lift supervisors, crane operators, and slingers/signallers. Delegate responsibilities and oversee lifting teams. Equipment Knowledge Understand crane capacities, load charts, and lifting accessories. Ensure equipment suitability and inspection requirements are met.

Skill Eligibility (Prerequisites for skill/software requirements)

CITB health, safety and environment test (managers and professionals level) passed no more than two years before the course start date, If you haven’t taken the test yet, there’s no need to worry—our centre is an approved CITB testing facility, and we’d be happy to assist you with booking your test to ensure everything is in place before the course begins. You should have sufficient experience of cranes to meet the requirements specified in British standard 7121 Safe Use of Cranes. Good understanding of spoken and written English.
