An online course teaching key concepts to help learners develop advanced knowledge of the complex language of medical terminology. Students have an assigned mentor, work through 9 x learning modules (each with end of module revision test), plus a final revision module (including 4x practice papers). Final exam sat using remote invigilation software on a date and time to suit the student. Course comprises of approximately 130 hours of CPD time. Content: - Medical terminology focusing on roots, prefixes, and suffixes, and recognition of terms from definitions. - Terminology and abbreviations related to body systems, medical specialties, and pharmacology. -Common medical abbreviations. -Routine blood tests. -Oncology terms -Common medicines and their uses - Anatomical terms: positions, structure and function

1. To be able to interpret a wide range of commonly used medical and pharmaceutical acronyms, symbols, and abbreviations across different medical specialities - e.g. #, PRN, CVA. 2. To demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of commonly used intestigations and medical tests plus any corresponding acronyms - e.g. FBC. 3. To be able to identify and use the correct medical term to describe different anatomical structures e.g., bones of the foot – metatarsal, through the use of roots/prefixes/suffixes and basic medical terminology concepts 4. To demonstrate an understanding of a wide range of medical conditions and the associated medical terminology e.g., dysplasia, stenosis. 5. To be able to interpret medical terminology by understanding approximately 300 medical prefixes, root words, and suffixes e.g., glosso (tongue) + megaly (enlarged) = glossomegaly - enlarged tongue. 6. To gain an understanding of the role of different medical specialities e.g., histology – the study of the microscopic structure of tissues. 7. To be able to confidently and accurately identify approximately 1000 common medical terms in the workplace covering bones of the body, circulatory system, reproductive system, urinary system, digestive system, respiratory system, lymphatic system, nervous system, the eye, the ear, hospital specialities and blood tests. 8. To be able to understand common classifications of medicine and reasons for their use 9. To show an understanding of common job titles relating to doctors and other Allied Health Professionals 10. To demonstrate an understanding of cancer related terminology and cancer staging 11. To understand anatomical/positional terms used in medicine relating to structure and function.
