Theories of Human Behavior: Learning about psychological theories that inform counselling practice, including the development of personality, attachment theories, and behavioural theories. Counselling Models: Exploring different models of counselling and understanding their application in real-world settings. 2. Effective Communication Skills Active Listening: Developing active listening skills, including paying full attention, understanding, and responding appropriately to clients. Empathy: Learning how to express empathy, recognizing the importance of non-judgmental and understanding responses to clients' feelings and experiences. Building Rapport: Understanding how to build a trusting and professional relationship with clients through open and supportive communication. Questioning Techniques: Developing skills in using open and closed questions to help clients explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. 3. Counselling Skills Reflective Practice: Learning to reflect on your own responses and feelings in counselling situations, and how to use this reflection to improve practice. Establishing Boundaries: Understanding the importance of setting and maintaining professional boundaries with clients to ensure a safe and effective therapeutic environment. Clarifying and Summarizing: Developing skills to clarify, paraphrase, and summarize clients’ words, helping them to explore and articulate their feelings more clearly. Non-Verbal Communication: Recognizing the importance of body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice, and how these non-verbal cues can impact the counselling relationship. 4. Understanding the Role of the Counsellor Counselling Ethics: Gaining an understanding of ethical principles in counselling, including confidentiality, informed consent, and respect for client autonomy. Professional Boundaries: Understanding the importance of maintaining professional boundaries in the therapeutic relationship and avoiding potential ethical dilemmas. Role of the Counsellor: Clarifying the role of the counsellor and the limitations of their practice, such as knowing when to refer clients to other professionals or services. Confidentiality: Learning the importance of confidentiality in counselling sessions and understanding when it may need to be breached (e.g., in cases of harm to self or others). 5. Developing Self-Awareness Personal Reflection: Gaining insight into your own feelings, behaviours, and experiences to improve your effectiveness as a counsellor. Handling Emotional Responses: Learning how to manage your emotional reactions in response to clients’ issues, while maintaining a professional approach.
