Skill Overview
*
*
A full-day training course designed to provide participants with a practical foundation in the key concepts and components of power electronics. The course begins with an overview of the role and importance of power electronics in modern energy and motion systems, followed by an introduction to semiconductor behaviour and switching principles. Participants will explore single and three-phase systems, the function and classification of power converters, and the operation of DC-DC converters. The fundamentals of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) are introduced, along with its application in basic position and speed control systems. Ideal for engineers, technicians, or anyone new to the field, this course offers a clear and engaging pathway into the world of power electronics.
Learning Objectives
*
*
1. Explain the role of power electronics in modern electrical engineering, and identify its applications across sectors such as industry, transport, and aerospace. 2. Describe the historical development of energy exploitation, from early energy sources like whale oil to the rise of petroleum and global energy companies. 3. Understand and describe the properties of semiconductors, including how they differ from conductors and insulators, and their significance in electronic devices. 4. Identify and explain the function of key semiconductor devices, such as standard diodes, Schottky diodes, and Zener diodes, and understand where they are used in real-world circuits. 5. Describe the operation of DC-DC converters, including buck (step-down) and boost (step-up) converters, and explain their importance in systems like solar panels, mobile devices, and power supplies. 6. Analyse basic power converter circuits and explain the principles behind efficient electrical energy conversion. 7. Apply knowledge in hands-on scenarios, using practical activities to build and test simple converter circuits and explore their behaviour. 8. Demonstrate understanding through formative assessment, by completing quizzes and exercises that reinforce learning and highlight areas for further study.
