Skill Overview

Understand the anatomy of the male and female urinary systems. 

This training course is intended for nurses and senior healthcare support workers whose job role includes catheterisation of male, female, and suprapubic patients. The differences with male and female catheterisation will be discussed, along with the reasons for catheterisation. Delegates will learn how to handle, insert, and change catheters safely and appropriately.

This training includes a practical session on a catheter model for both male, female, and suprapubic patients. Our trainers will have all relevant equipment and models to deliver the practical sessions.

Each course is for up to 12 people and can take place at your own location.

Learning Objectives

Know you can perform it and when  

Be aware of the conditions that would necessitate catheterisation  

Know the different materials used in catheters  

Understand how catheterisation is performed upon both male and female anatomy  

Recognise the dangers of catheterisation  

Be aware of the symptoms of infections and haematuria  

Understand which documents need to be completed  

Know how to correctly assess and notate the fluid balances of patients  

Understand the procedure to take a urinalysis test
